Prison Parenting: The Importance of Mothers Remaining Connected and Fostering Relationships with their Children while Incarcerated
Abstract/Description
Abstract
Parenting in general is challenging since it is quite subjective. There is constant self questioning on whether you are disciplining correctly, are you providing enough for your child(ren), are we helping them manage emotions in a healthy and positive manner. These are just a few of the challenges parents might struggle with when raising children. Now imagine these questions from the perspective of someone that is incarcerated. As someone who experienced this misfortune as a child, I struggle with maintaining a relationship with my father. With this being the foundation of my curiosity, I want to explore what programs are available for mothers that are incarcerated in order for them to remain connected and foster a lasting relationship with their children. The purpose of this exploration is to shed light on the importance of the maternal relationship of incarcerated mothers, how pregnant women are treated at the time of incarceration through the birth of their child, and the impact incarceration has on this relationship.
