Abstract/Description
This presentation will provide an overview of state government budgeting and the effects of government spending on socioeconomic factors. Specifically, this research investigates the influence of state spending on achievement within elementary and secondary education and the influence of state spending on unemployment rates. The first analysis utilizes government expenditure data from the National Association of State Budget Officers and National Assessment of Educational Progress test scores in mathematics and reading for fourth and eighth-grade students. The secondary analysis assesses the impact of total state government expenditure on unemployment rates, utilizing expenditure data from the National Association of State Budget Officers and state-level unemployment rates as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
