Title:Using network analysis to personalize care for Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder is the compulsive behavior to overeat food, usually within a brief time frame. Symptoms such as anxiety, fear of being fat and perfectionism could trigger a person to binge eat. Network analysis is a statistical approach in health psychology that uses graphical representations of relationships among variables, and could be useful in identifying the symptoms that cause Binge Eating Disorder. The information collected could come from surveys, interviews or clinical studies. Network analysis allows for patient-specific care; if a patient experiences one symptom more frequently than others, that could be one of the main symptoms to focus on in anintervention. Identifying the point at which a patient begins to binge eat, or feels the pressure to, is the main goal. With using network analysis, providers will be able to better assist patients on a more specific level, rather than general. The patients are also able to be hands-on in their therapeutic healing, since they can identify where pressures reside for their particular cases. People that suffer from Binge Eating Disorder struggle greatly with perfectionism, as shown by network analysis. One of the solutions that could be demonstrated by network analysis as it relates to Binge Eating Disorder is to strengthen strategies to maintain positive self-image as patients learn to appreciate themselves as they are. This project was funded by the UofL Bridges to the Baccalaureate (ULBB) program.
