Abstract
The nonprofit sector has changed from basic level volunteer programs to professionalized nonprofit organizations. The role of the leader has also become professionalized with one person filling multiple roles within the nonprofit organization. To be an effective leader, it is important to understand the different roles and skills needed. Roles that may be required of the leader are: financial management, such as securing funding and maintaining the budget; service management, such as client services, client relationships, data, and reporting; workforce management including attracting, retaining, and engaging employees, handling employee burnout, and working with volunteers, and operations management, maintaining the facilities and obtaining resources, and handling crisis. With these roles, there are also challenges.
