POVERTY AND IT’S IMPACTS ON PEOPLE, EDUCATION, COMMUNITY, AND COUNTRY

Abstract

Abstract

Poverty is an increasingly concerning problem in the United States today, both in academic achievement and economic success. The purpose of this paper is to be a review of poverty in the United States of America, its impacts on the education and achievement of the children raised in it, and how the continuation of poverty, due to the lack of academic achievement, affects society and the economy. In addition to defining poverty the causes of poverty are presented. The first question considered is does poverty affect the academic and work life achievement of a person over their lifespan from early childhood to high school, to college, and into the workforce in adulthood, when a portion of their childhood is spent living in persistent poverty? Secondly, what affect does the high level of poverty and low academic and professional achievement have on the community and economy? The paper concludes with an examination of whether education improvements can help reduce poverty. Findings suggest a correlation between living in a home with a low socioeconomic status and low academic achievement impacts a child as the mature to adulthood in many ways. Poverty also has a significant impact on a community and the country as a whole.
