Video Game Lighting Throughout the Eras: A Deep Dive

Abstract

There are many aspects of the development of video games that often go underappreciated by the people playing them. This paper hones in on one specific concept of game development, lighting, and aims to educate readers about the thought and effort it takes to develop proper lighting effects. The paper takes the form of a chronological analysis, providing insight into development strategies of the games of each time period, along with how advancements in technology have allowed these concepts to be further explored and expanded upon. From different software functionality and implementation strategies to understanding the psychological effect that these important visuals project onto the player, this paper will explore the many different design choices that go into creating a game with strong and memorable lighting.
