Autism Support
Abstract
There is one area of disability that is among one of the most prominent in schools today and that is Autism. Autism is identified as a spectrum disorder where someone is diagnosed with one of three levels, level one, two, or three. The goal of this paper is to determine how to help students with autism in and out of the classroom.
One of the main ways that people can help students diagnosed with autism inside the classroom is having a specific routine that the student follows every day. This can be done multiple ways the teacher can write the schedule step by step on the board or laminate some picture cards and set on their desk. Another way that people can help students with autism in the classroom is to be sensitive to the students’ sensory problems. For example, if an autistic student is sensitive to loud noises provide earphones or if possible, remove the object from the room. A third intervention that people can use for a student with autism is to be careful of the language that People use with these students. For example, instead of saying do not run in the classroom say please walk while in the classroom.
Just because an autistic student leaves the classroom does not mean that people cannot use some of the same strategies with those students at home. One of the largest ways that people can help a student with autism is routine. Another way that people can help a student with autism at home is using choice boards for meals or time with family. Another big way that people can help an autistic child at home is through verbal reinforcement. For example, the child has trouble with aggression whenever the student does not get their way but one time, the student calmly
does what someone wants the child to do and then can reward with something that the student enjoys doing.
