Should College Athletes Be Able to Sports

Abstract

This paper looks at the question of whether college athletes can participate in sports betting in today's day in time. This question has become more pertinent as more states within the United States have legalized gambling on sports. Supporters of this idea believe that college athletes are adults and should have access to the same privileges as any other adult, including betting on sporting events. They argue that as long as athletes are educated about gambling and practice it responsibly, there should not be any concerns. Responsible gambling ensures that one does not exceed the limits of their finances or disrupt their obligations, such as, school, work, sports, or even personal life.

Many are against the idea of college athletes betting on college sports. Concerns range from the idea of game fixing, cheating, and gambling addiction as the most serious risks. If athletes participate in betting, particularly for games they are part of or have insider knowledge, fans of college sports are bound to be hurt. Reputation risks will be extended to the schools, teams, coaches and the athletes themselves. College sports should be based on fairness and honest hard work not on personal financial gain or self-interest.

This paper expands on both sides of the debate, but discusses in detail why stopping collegiate athletes from sports betting is crucial for preserving the integrity of the game. While gambling may be legal in a multitude of places, college athletes must be kept away from activities which could jeopardize their future and the sport they admire, ensuring that they remain dedicated to their studies and athletic performance.
