Abstract
Astronomy is both a field that answers fundamental theories and questions about our universe, while also advancing practical innovations that are used today. Astronomy analyzes questions about life beyond planet Earth and explores how planets, galaxies, and stars form. From early stargazers who only depended on stars for timekeeping and navigation to new advances in telescopes and space missions, astronomy has deepened the knowledge of humans for centuries. Astronomy has also supplied us with ways to track time, make calendars, and use navigation such as GPS systems. Beyond expanding discoveries, astronomy created technologies with wide-ranging features-- including medical imaging, satellite systems, and climate monitoring systems-- that have influenced fields of modern communication, medicine, and climate.
Studying other planets around Earth can give a better understanding such as risk factors that could affect Earth’s atmosphere or climate. For example, scientists have a better understanding of possible things that could harm Earth’s stability because they examined the loss of atmosphere on Mars and/or the greenhouse effects on Venus. Understanding planetary climates can help predict Earth’s future—such as global warming. Comparing each planets atmosphere and climate processes gives us a better understanding of natural hazards—such as asteroid impacts and solar radiation. From some of the earliest leaders, Galileo and Newton, to modern scientists and researchers, have inspired more generations to progress scientific knowledge and leave curiosity. This paper links practical aspects with space exploration, explaining the importance of astronomy as a field that connects discovery to real-world uses. Astronomy sparks questions and is a field that will expand its advancements and research continuously.
