Counselor, Educator, and Protector: A Manual for First-Time SROs
Abstract
When people become police officers, there are manuals for operation that are provided to them about multiple topics including the laws of arrest, vehicle operations, and constitutional issues. However, manuals that cover the basics of School Resource Officers are scarce at best. I analyzed and utilized qualitative methods to determine best practices and methods for school safety used by school resource practitioners across the country. This manual is designed to provide the user with knowledge and tools along with multiple views of the roles and responsibilities of School Resource Officers. Furthermore, this document provides a history of police in schools, examines the need for police in schools, as well as discusses the laws that give the officers their authority to operate in a school situation. Finally, this manual, through exhaustive examination of effective programs, provides readers with best practices when considering training, enforcement, and ethical considerations.
