Complex Organizations: Understanding Hospital Leadership

Abstract

Abstract

Professionalism and ethics are the cornerstone values that every successful hospital is founded upon. These values are what a mission statement is built from and incorporated throughout all decisions from top leadership down. Impactful leadership recognizes the importance of enacting policies and procedures that align with the mission statement they espouse. Assuming the mission of a hospital is to serve all stakeholders and benefit the surrounding community, leadership will implement policies and procedures that hold them accountable to those they bear responsibility to. First, hospital leadership must prioritize their responsibilities to the patient. Patients deserve equitable patient centered care that reinforces the bond of trust between them and their care providers. This practice will create a positive relationship between the hospital and community. Second, hospital leadership must acknowledge their responsibility to employee welfare and protection. This practice reaffirms a healthy relationship between employee and employer leading to a positive workplace culture. Finally, hospital leadership is responsible for appropriate financial stewardship that balances spending in the interests of all stakeholders. Smart financial stewardship secures the future of the hospital allowing it to serve the community for many years to come. Values like empathy, collaboration, and trust are the foundation of professionalism and ethics. Effective leadership understands the importance of incorporating values enabling all stakeholders to share in their vision of a healthier community. Leadership that enacts policies that prioritize the needs of all stakeholders while simultaneously incorporating the mission and values they espouse place the hospital on a prosperous path.
