The Language of the Future: A Comprehensive Analysis of the English Language

Abstract

Abstract

This paper combines a multitude of research articles concerning the growth of English from its West Germanic roots, the spread of its evolved form from a concentrated area to its current global position, and the contemporary trends that can lend evidence to predicting its future. Using four linguistic experts’ comprehensive histories of the development of English, it creates a roadmap explaining not only how English has evolved, but how languages evolve universally. Compiling two studies regarding slang usage in non-English speaking European countries, two studies reviewing the attitudes of post-colonial nations who were forced to adopt English, and one study investigating the potential future of the language, this paper aims to illustrate the growing global dominance of the English language and where that might lead. Also borrowing from the fields of intercultural communications and world history, the following research is an interdisciplinary and comprehensive look at the English language, both past, present, and future. Comparing the inevitable assimilation of elements of English into other countries with their respective attitudes toward that assimilation leads this paper to suggest a future where a new global language is invented on the structure of English. This essay argues this new form of English will increase the effectiveness of international communications while maintaining the cultural and historical traditions of non-native speaking countries and their local languages.
