Haiti’s Economic Despair and Instability: A Country Regressed
Abstract
During the 1970’s and before, Haiti economy was thriving. Tourism and industry was booming. Over the years, several factors led to Haiti’s decline. Natural disasters plagued the country. Fierce dictators and crooked politicians one after another promising to turn things around but as soon as they would take office greed and power changed them. They drained the government funds and made off with millions while their country lived in poverty. Poor decisions and steep tariffs caused industry to take a turn for the worse. Then the 2010 earthquake hit and claimed 300,000 lives. It never recovered and has continued to decline ever since. How did one of the wealthiest countries in the western hemisphere become the poorest? What led to this stark contrast? Is there any hope for this tiny country approximately the size of Maryland?
