THE BENEFITS OF PLAY BASED LEARNING FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD AND ELEMENTARY AGED CHILDREN
Abstract
This paper takes a look at the importance and benefits of play based learning in early childhood and elementary education. Play based learning is what supports cognitive, social, and emotional skills by letting children use hands on, important experiences that help in the connection with their child like curiosity. Instead of using only structured, and academic lessons, this kind of approach gives students the opportunities to learn through guided play and social interactions. Research shows that when a child is learning through play, they are building stronger problem solving skills, communication, and emotional regulation. These skills will lay the foundation for long term success in academics and relationships for children. This paper also looks at how play based learning is used in real classrooms, and how teachers can apply it, and what challenges will come along the way. Things such as academic pressures, curriculum demands, and lack of training can stop educators from using play based learning. The paper ends with recommendations for how schools and others can help support play based through professional development for teachers, curriculum, and with families. Overall, play based learning is a powerful part of education that needs more attention and support in early education.
