UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF POVERTY ON STUDENT LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENT
Abstract
There is a correlation between income inequality and education. It is necessary for the teacher to explore the key characteristics and challenges that impact a child’s ability to be academically successful in the classroom. The research revealed how resources, environments, opportunities, support systems, physical health, and mental health affect the disadvantaged child’s academic outcome. The success or failure of an impoverished student is dependent upon the influences in both the school and home because poor children face more challenging obstacles than more affluent children. Peer-reviewed academic resources were critically studied to understand the connection between poverty and education. Low-income children typically face more challenges and disadvantages when compared to their higher-income counterparts. Families at a lower income level typically have higher stress, poorer health, and less assistance from their support systems and the successful educators must fully understand the issues faced by the impoverished child in order to work with them effectively in the classroom.
