Communication For All: Access to AAC devices
Abstract
Communication is a basic human right, a fundamental part of everyday life for all individuals. tasks Communication allows for development of friendships, expressing needs and wants, making choices, and the ability to engage in the world around us. For individuals with complex communication needs, these can be difficult, if not impossible. The use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices can be the difference between communication and isolation for these individuals. With a vast selection of devices and technologies, selecting the correct device fit can be a challenge. With cost and training also acting as a potential barrier for implementation and long-term success, AAC devices and technologies are not always successful from the start. Continued research is needed to determine the best ways to implement these devices, how to best incorporate support persons and communication partners, as well as how to best develop new technologies in order to best serve the individuals who rely on these technologies for communication on a daily basis. As we focus on the best ways to incorporate these technologies into everyday lives, we must look at how to best support families and care givers in order to ensure the long term success of these devices and individuals.
