Feature Articles
The “Feature Articles” section of Contemporary Rural Social Work presents original rural research by authors in rural areas. While potential topics and methodologies are numerous, these research papers contain original work and clearly certify IRB approval when human subjects are involved. They may also reflect metaanalyses, literature reviews, policy position statements, and other related topics of import to rural social work. To be considered for review, submissions must reflect strict fidelity with APA (6th edition) format and style (please refer to Author Guidelines in the "For Authors" section of the website).

Practice Notes
The “Practice Notes” section of Contemporary Rural Social Work presents innovative, actual, and replicable interventions used by authors in rural areas. Practice Notes are not research papers (containing a research question and quantitative or qualitative methodology) but are descriptions of an actual practice intervention. Practice Notes should adhere to the following guidelines:
- RATIONALE -- explain why the intervention or practice is particularly appropriate for use in rural areas
- DESCRIPTION -- provide a description of the population to which the intervention was applied including geographic location, race, age, and any other relevant demographic information
- CLEAR AND CONCISE EXPLICATION of the intervention or practice
- PAGE LIMITATION -- 8 to 10 pages including references
- REFERENCES – A limited number of references are allowed and should be current and related to rural practice and to the specific population and intervention discussed in the practice note
- RELEVANT AND USEFUL – The paper should provide discussion of how you determined the intervention was effective and should provide recommendations to rural social work practitioners for replication and/or modification of the intervention.
For format and style, please refer to Author Guidelines in the "For Authors" section of the website.

Teaching Notes
The “Teaching Notes” section of Contemporary Rural Social Work presents descriptions of actual teaching experiences. These could include classes, pedagogy, content, etc. that reflect some uniqueness that differentiates them from usual teaching practices and contexts. Teaching Notes should offer recommendations for social work educators.
For format and style, please refer to Author Guidelines in the "For Authors" section of the website.

Book Reviews
The “Book Reviews” section of Contemporary Rural Social Work presents reports about relevant and recent books related to practice, cultural competence, education, policy, human behavior, diversity, social and economic justice, research, and innovations in the field of rural social work. Published reviews are generally 800 to 1200 words; however, exceptionally important books or multi-book reviews may be longer. Submissions not in strict APA (6th edition) conformity will be returned without review. Please include the following information in the top left-hand corner of the first page of text:

The following review is encouraged:
- Opening paragraph – Describe who the author(s) is, to whom the book is addressed, and the central argument(s). One thing that works very well here is to comment on the degree to which the author(s) accomplished his/her goal, why this is the case, and what else the book really offers the reader.
- Middle paragraph(s) – Describe the contents of each chapter or major section of the book. Reviews should focus on the content of the book rather than the reviewer’s opinions. Summarize the content for your reader instead of writing about the content.
- Next to last paragraph – Provide an assessment of the author’s arguments, use of evidence, and logical implications. Assess both strengths and weakness. This is not a comprehensive catalog of every flaw noted by the reviewer, but an evaluative critique best thought of as suggestions for improvement. Show the reader that the book was reviewed with a critical eye.
- Last paragraph – Describe who will benefit most from reading this book, and why the book is relevant to rural social work.
- Reviewer’s Note – Your name, position, professional affiliation, and complete contact information (street address, email address).
For format and style, please refer to Author Guidelines in the "For Authors" section of the website.
