Imperial Anglicanism in Colonial America
Project Abstract
During the colonial period in North America, Great Britain attempted to influence and control their colonies through the Church of England. Religion was fundamental to many people of that period and it was possible to create dependence on Britain by making people join and financially support the established Anglican Church. I intend to show through the diaries of British missionaries in colonial America as well as correspondence between these missionaries and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel how there was an attempt to exert imperial control on these colonies.
