With the current technological landscape rapidly changing, the world is being transitioned into the digital age. Crime is no longer just out on the streets but now found mostly on the internet. Every day there are many cases of identity theft and malware infection. These crimes can be easily flagged and prevented with an intrusion detection system (IDS) which can filter internet traffic and constantly scan for malicious activity on a network. Most of the commercially available IDS are too expensive for the common household, but now with the combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) and open-source software, this could change to where anyone can have and protect themselves online with an IDS. Using a Raspberry Pi, this IoT device can aid in reducing cybersecurity attacks on the average household.
The device will be connected to the modem, which is the main entry point for the internet in most home networks. The IDS software will be consistently scouring data that you access online and alert you when malicious or devious activity is found. From there, you can take action and let the device block that activity, therefore, removing the threat. In addition, this could be further implemented by jailbreaking older android phones and using these devices as a dedicated IDS for the home as well.
The implementation of a home security system could be beneficial for businesses as well. An internet service provider could offer a managed security system for the home by providing these Raspberry Pi IDS’s as part of the internet service or managed hardware. This way the end-users are protected and the internet service provider is providing a unique security as a service option at a low cost. The combination of security and the IoT will change the way companies do business and security at the home network level is just the beginning into a plethora of smart, small and efficient IoT security possibilities.
