Abstract/Description

Health care is growing ever diverse and linguistically challenging. Language barriers in healthcare are an important issue that has a need for change. The question to be researched is, How do nurses and other healthcare providers overcome the growing barrier preventing efficient patient care for those who are non-English speaking? This was explored through the participation of Murray Calloway County Hospital (MCCH) offering their current policies on the topic. The method used for this Evidence Based Practice research included analyzing previous research performed over language barriers in healthcare, with findings including that online interpretation tools are the most cost-effective and provide the most ability to be utilized. These results determine that MCCH’s current policies regarding interpretation guidelines are fluent with the research that we have found pertaining to the issue. Adjustments to these policies were made to make them more efficient and new policies were added. The research was presented to three registered nurses at MCCH in order to inspire the staff to enforce the changes within the facility.
