Social media has taken the sports world by storm, bringing along some new and unique challenges. Social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat have created an easy route for fans to have access to their favorite sports, teams, coaches, and athletes. With this new found access, fans are able to tell their favorite sports figures what they really think; this can be positive or negative. Cultivation theory details the way that the media impacts everyon ein one way or another; with that being said, whatever an athlete reads about themself online can lead to impacting their performance, whether it be helpful or hurtful. Consumption of social media has shown to have a negative affect on athletes performance as a whole, particularly with female athletes.
