Abstract/Description

The purpose of implementing standard protocols for Infection Control is to ensure the safety of employees, clients, and their families by providing a framework for the investigation, control, and prevention of infectious diseases and infections. Standard Precautions, also known as barrier precautions or universal precautions, are utilized at all times regardless of the patient’s diagnosis. However, research has shown that healthcare professionals are non-adherent to these precautions. There have been various suggested and tested interventions to improve compliance amongst nurses, as well as studies examining why this issue is so prevalent. A new policy is needed at Murray-Calloway County Hospital’s OB department to improve compliance. After interviewing staff who work in the OB department three core areas were assessed to be in need of improvement regarding compliance: in-service training, proper utilization of PPE, and proper cleaning of blood and body fluids. These issues should be removed using a combination of education, audits and feedback, and infection control link nurses.
