Abstract/Description

Sports media is a multi-billion dollar business with a wide reach and wide appeal. And yet, it impacts individuals on a personal level as well, specifically the mental health of the very athletes it publicizes. Research shows this impact has positive and negative implications. In some cases, athletes find themselves trying to overcome cyberbullying and harassment, increased stress and anxiety, hindered performance, depression and even psychological threat. And yet there are many positives to be found too: the ability to self-present, self-empowerment via various platforms and financial compensation.
