Abstract/Description

Maria Gaetana Agnesi was a mathematician and scholar from Milan in the 1700's. She was one of the first women to be given a position of department chair and professor at a University. Her life and the lives of several of her contemporaries provide insight into the nuances of the classification of proto-femenists and the nature of the movement as a whole. Ultimately explaining the importance of considering different historical variables when classifying historical figures as proponents of certain movements.
