Abstract/Description
This project was based on the fact that there is a severe nursing shortage happening in the United States. On average, nurses can have four to eight patients at one time which makes a twelve hour shift almost unbearable due to the stress of keeping all of the patients alive and satisfied with the care they are receiving. During the pandemic, staffing shortages have become one of the main issues faced by healthcare workers across the nation. Due to the staffing shortages and COVID-19 precautions, nurses have not only been taking on more patients but also have increased their workload in order to try and prevent their patients from being exposed to more people than necessary. Studies show that an increase in stress can lead to burnout and poor employee retention. When nurses are burnt out and short staffed it easily leads to poor patient outcomes and decreased satisfaction levels. There are several interventions that nurses can complete in order to reduce their stress levels. For instance, they can participate in mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) techniques and participate in art interventions such as coloring, working with clay, and listening to music. Nurses who partook in an eight week MBSR course showed that after four months, their scores improved tremendously and that there was a reduced amount of perceived stress and improved satisfaction with life. After a study done on nurses who did active art interventions, it showed that stress was significantly reduced in thirty out of the thirty seven included studies. Research shows when nurses participate in stress reducing activities it has a positive outcome for staff and patients.
