Abstract/Description

"Consciousness Raising" was a technique developed by second-wave feminists meant to "Make the Personal Political." Since the second-wave, consciousness raising has changed media and form to address specific issues faced by feminists over time, but the connecting thread is the use of the personal. Today's feminisms make use of consciousness raising in a variety of ways, depending on that particular feminism's goals and viewpoint. One of these feminisms, so-called "Transgender Exclusionary Radical Feminism," uses contemporary forms of consciousness raising for precisely the opposite effect: to make the political personal.
