Abstract/Description

The media has an effect on how we perceive the world around us, including how we think about sex and sexuality. The specific focus of this study is the way media portrays kink/BDSM and other alt-sexualities. This leads to stigma, myths, and misconceptions about how people perceive other forms of sexual expression. Participants were collected many ways; through SONA, social media, and on campus social groups via QR code. It is expected that there will be a positive correlation between exposure to BDSM in the media and negative attitudes towards alt-sexuality. It is also expected there will be a positive correlation between exposure to BDSM in the media and belief in many myths and misconceptions of the practices. This is important because it offers insight into the stigma faced by participants in alt-sexualities due to myths perpetuated by the media.
