Abstract/Description
Abstract
The American healthcare system needs more competent anesthesia providers across the nation. Surgical demand is increasing with an aging population, increasing the strain on adequate anesthesia staffing. With the rising cost of nurse anesthesia programs, more academic scholarship programs are needed to increase nurse anesthesia school admission rates and financially support graduate students. The purpose of this paper was to explore scholarship opportunities provided by the Air Force Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) and how these can help graduate-level nursing students. An in-depth review was conducted with Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) on scholarship opportunity awareness and knowledge. The methodology of this study included pre- and post-surveys with a PowerPoint presentation that was completed by seven CRNAs at a large 410-bed regional hospital in Kentucky. The results of this study revealed that six out of seven CRNAs agreed that knowledge was gained from the presentation. All seven CRNAs were able to answer the multiple choice survey questions correctly, and all agreed that they had received questions about the cost of CRNA school. This study concluded that most surveyed CRNAs did gain knowledge about academic scholarship programs for potential nurse anesthetist students and the financial burden CRNA schools place on graduate students. The project results indicated that future research is needed in this area of study, and it is recommended that a larger sample size should be utilized.
