Abstract

Entry level healthcare professionals who are called into management may seem to be in over their head upon first glance. This guide will serve as a basic guide for beginner healthcare managers in skilled nursing facilities, acute care settings such as hospitals, and private practice settings. A skilled healthcare manager will become proficient through diligence and experience. The three main focuses to any healthcare manager are managing people, managing finances, and managing external factors. This guide will take a look into these 3 subjects breaking them down into more specific and understandable terms for each of the three practice settings listed above. As a result, it will become apparent to the reader that managing people, finances, and external factors are of the utmost importance to healthcare managers. Topics highlighted will include financial management, marketing, and strategic planning; clinical quality and human resources; and managing external factors such as demographics where this section will also include plant and supplies management and information services. With an ever changing and complex healthcare system, a new manager can become a bit overwhelmed, this guide will serve as a quick reference and beginners guide to optimizing performance in healthcare management settings.
