Digital Exposure and Human Development: Understanding the Impacts of Screen Time Across the Lifespan

Abstract

The increasing use of digital devices has changed daily life for all age groups, raising important questions about how screen exposure affects development. This research paper compiles findings from more than twenty research sources to explore how screen time impacts cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth from infancy to adulthood. Research shows that early and excessive exposure can interfere with language learning, attention control, and social bonding in children, while moderate, intentional use can improve learning and communication. For teenagers and adults, screen time has been associated with both positive effects, such as gaining information and connecting with communities, and negative effects, like sleep problems, less physical activity, and mental health issues. By combining findings across the lifespan, this paper emphasizes the need for balanced technology use and evidence-based guidelines for families, teachers, and policymakers.
