Abstract
Medical care in the US is ranked among the highest in the world when it comes to breakthroughs and discoveries but also ranked highest in the cause of debt amongst its citizens. Some Americans have easy access to excellent care and pay a high cost for it, while others have limited access and must pay an even higher cost. Network restrictions, high deductibles, prior authorizations are just some of the never-ending red tapes that can keep the proper care out of a patient’s grasp. While people grapple with obtaining needed care, private insurance companies are creating monopolies and lining the pockets of those in power to lobby against change. Reform is needed now more than ever. Historical and political literature were surveyed to establish and support the need for policy change and to help determine whether moving the US to single-payor or multi-payor systems would be beneficial. Medical journals and news articles were also used to keep up with the ever-changing landscape of the current political environment. Peer reviewed medical journals were consulted to further prove the need for better access to proper care and to illustrate the communities that suffer from lack thereof. The data gathered using various mediums all seem to agree that healthcare reform is desperately needed. But, despite the barrage of bills, proposals, and talks in support of change, the U.S. is further away from reform than ever.
