New Literacies and Traditional Elements
Abstract
In a modern world that is quickly adapting in terms of educational demands, societal contexts, and technology, it is a pivotal moment to prepare students for contemporary requisites of literary comprehension. Comprehension as the foremost goal of reading needs to accept the technological tools necessary to flourish in a time of developing literacies and contexts surrounding reading. The needs of students to understand how to engage in the world through a literary lens is changing, and the field of education must meet them where they are out to ensure students success both in the classroom and in society at large. The incorporation of various forms of text and literacies can be incorporated into the essentials of reading that lead to comprehension. This paper views the elements of reading and reviews how the internet can impact the development of reading comprehension. After reviewing phonics, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and fluency, the mental strategies and internal reasoning necessary for comprehension are examined through the view of online reading.
