Abstract/Description

The influence of sports media on athletes extends beyond the playing field, greatly impacting their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. This paper examines critical areas of media influence, including body image distortion, youth athlete body ideals, and the promotion of disordered eating, and concludes by discussing the shaming of mental health struggles in sports. Media portrayal often glorifies physical endurance, potentially encouraging athletes to play through injuries and risking long-term health consequences. Also, the intense focus on athletes' personal lives and performance has added to mental health challenges, creating pressure to meet public and media expectations, often at the expense of their well-being. Understanding the complex relationship between sports media and athlete health is essential in promoting a balanced, ethical approach to sports journalism, and prioritizing athlete well-being.
