Abstract/Description

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the current nursing policy regarding education, knowledge, and compliance of PPE (personal protective equipment) among patient families and visitors, and to further assess whether or not the policy in place needs to be strengthened and improved, or changed altogether. Upon investigation, it was found that PPE compliance and knowledge as well as hand hygiene compliance are lacking and are current issues seen among not only families and visitors of families, but nurses as well. There are few studies about this topic due to the fact that it is an issue that is under-recognized by the nursing community, thus PPE and precaution use needs enforcement as well as further education about the importance of its use. For this research project, Spring Creek Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation located in Murray, Kentucky was chosen to assess current policy involving PPE and precaution implementation. Based on evidence in literature found, the nursing practice at this facility is evidence based, but needs further improvement to increase education, knowledge, and compliance among visitors and families. Potential actions to improve compliance and knowledge of patient families and visitors are discussed, including the suggestion of fact sheets to provide to them that consists of information regarding isolation precautions, how to don and doff PPE, proper hand hygiene, and proper mask usage due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
